2012 Kias to be built with WiBro wireless internet capability

With the constant advancements in technology, our society always seems to wonder, what’s next? Well, what is next almost seemed inevitable, but I don’t think anyone thought so soon.  Kia announced they will be installing wireless internet in their vehicles set for production in 2012.

Having the internet at our fingertips makes our lives much easier (and that much more complicated). For business people, this step is very innovative and beneficial; it will allow them to pull out their lap top at any point and shoot a quick e-mail or reference a client’s website.  For others, it’s just a simple luxury. Some things you would never even think of can be done with this addition such as downloading music from iTunes on your iPod touch, watching YouTube videos or staying updated on current news headlines at CNN.com.

Partnered with Hyundai, Kia looks forward to introducing this wireless internet for cars, dubbed WiBro, which most likely will be “jointly developed by KT CORP, a fixed-line Internet operator”. Not only can you access standard internet, drivers would also be able to receive digital movies in their car- sounds safe, huh? Well hopefully the drivers won’t be watching the movies, but for children in the back seat or front-seat passengers, it would be a great feature. In addition, WiBro would allow drivers to stay on top of weather and traffic conditions and receive emergency information.

“WiBro is South Korea’s homegrown technical standard for mobile Internet, based on the WiMax wireless platform developed by the US-based technology company, Intel.” Korea having one third of their population – approximately 16 million- as broadband subscribers, they clearly know what they’re doing. We can only expect the accuracy and speed of the internet to be top notch.
